  • Metro (Metrorail)
    Washington, D.C. has an extensive Metrorail system operated by WMATA (Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority). It consists of six color-coded lines: Red, Blue, Orange, Silver, Green, and Yellow. Metrorail is one of the most efficient ways to travel within the city and to nearby suburbs.


    Metrobus
    WMATA also operates Metrobus services, which complement the Metrorail system. Metrobus covers a wide area within D.C. and its suburbs. You can use a SmarTrip card to pay for both Metrorail and Metrobus fares.

    Cycling
    Washington, D.C. has an expanding network of bike lanes and bike-sharing programs. Capital Bikeshare is a popular bike-sharing service available throughout the city, allowing you to rent bikes for short trips.

    D.C. also has several scenic biking trails, such as the Capital Crescent Trail, the Mount Vernon Trail, and the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail, which are great for recreational cyclists and commuters.

    Walking
    D.C. is a pedestrian-friendly city, especially in the downtown area. Many of the city's major attractions, museums, and landmarks are within walking distance of each other.

    Taxis and Ride-Sharing

    Taxis are readily available in Washington, D.C., and you can also use ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft to get around. These services are convenient for reaching destinations not well-served by public transportation.

    Tourist Trolleys
    There are hop-on-hop-off tourist trolleys that provide narrated tours of the city's major attractions while allowing you to disembark and explore at your own pace.

    Amtrak and MARC Trains
    If you plan to travel to neighboring cities like Baltimore or beyond, you can use Amtrak or MARC (Maryland Area Regional Commuter) trains. Union Station in D.C. is a major transportation hub for Amtrak services.

  • National Mall
